Irreducibly Normative Properties

چکیده
On the nonnaturalists’ view, ... reality has ‘brute, inexplicable’ normativity, which cannot be explained in motivational or other natural terms. This inexplicability is twofold: we cannot explain what normativity is in nonnormative language, and neither can we explain why the fundamental normative truths hold (e.g., why the fact that pain hurts counts in favor of preventing it). Being Realistic about Reasons
In my first lecture I listed seven questions about reasons that seemed to require answers. These were: Relational Character: Reasons are reasons for an agent. How is this relational character to be understood? Ground of Truth: In virtue of what are claims about reasons true, when they are true? Does the idea that claims about reasons are true or false, independent of our opinions about them, an...
متن کاملThe consistency and ecological rationality approaches to normative bounded rationality
This paper focuses on tacit versus explicit uses of plural performance metrics as a primary methodological characteristic. This characteristic usefully distinguishes two schools of normative analysis and their approaches to normative interpretations of bounded rationality. Both schools of thought make normative claims about bounded rationality by comparing the performance of decision procedures...
متن کاملMinimal Diagrams of Free Knots
An irreducibly odd graph is a graph such that each vertex has odd degree and for every pair of vertices, a third vertex in the graph is adjacent to exactly one of the pair. This family of graphs was introduced recently by Manturov [1] in relation to free knots. In this paper, we show that every graph is the induced subgraph of an irreducibly odd graph. Furthermore, we prove that irreducibly odd...
متن کاملAre there Irreducibly Relational Facts?
If the former is the case, let us say that anti-reductionism about relational facts is true; if the latter, that reductionism about relational facts is true. Let us say that a fact is relational if it makes true some relational proposition (a proposition that asserts that a relation holds between some objects1), that it is irreducibly relational if, in addition, it does not make true any nonrel...
متن کاملPrécis of Self-Knowledge and Resentment
The term ‘privileged access’, on the lips and keyboards of philosophers, expresses an intuition that self-knowledge is unique among the knowledges human beings possess, unique in being somehow more direct and less prone to error than other kinds of knowledge such as, say, our knowledge of the physical world or of the mental states of others. These notions of ‘directness ‘ and ‘immunity to error...
